Investigations into Nairobi Governor candidate Johnson Sakaja’s academic background have been halted by the Ugandan judiciary.
In order to stop the Ugandan government from looking into the case, Team University, the university from which Sakaja claimed to have graduated, filed a lawsuit.
To prevent the Ugandan government from looking into the qualification given to Sakaja by Team, the high court on Tuesday imposed temporary orders.
On July 14, the case will be heard.
The Kampala-based university, which is currently the focus of an investigation by the Ugandan Council for Higher Education, had filed two cases (NCHE).
The university had requested that Justice Jamson Karemani of the Kampala High Court halt the NCHE’s investigation into the degree. In Kenya, the validity of the degree is also being questioned.
Two organizations, the National Council for Higher Education and the Inspectorate of Government, are looking into Sakaja’s degree in Uganda.
But on June 29, 2022, the NCHE released itself from liability in a letter to the Commission of University Education (CEU), allowing the Inspectorate of Government (IG) to complete its own inquiry.
“NCHE started looking into the legitimacy of the Bachelor of Science in Management (External) degree that Team University had given Sakaja Johnson Arthur. But before we could finish our investigations, the IG started looking into the same issue, so we had to put our plans on hold, according to Prof. Mary Okwakol, executive director of NCHE.
