Senate Awaits Governor Guyo’s Impeachment Showdown

The Senate will hold a high-stakes special sitting on Monday, June 30, to deliberate the impeachment of Isiolo Governor Abdi Hassan Guyo, amid deepening political tensions and reports of violence and chaos in the county.

The sitting, gazetted by Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, will begin at 10:00 a.m. and focus exclusively on the impeachment motion, which was passed by 16 out of 18 Isiolo County Assembly Members.

The motion, tabled by Sericho MCA Abubakar Godana, accuses Governor Guyo of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and violation of constitutional provisions.

But what was initially framed as a legal process has taken a dramatic and chaotic turn. On Thursday, shortly after the vote, violence erupted at the Isiolo County Assembly.

Police have since launched investigations into vandalism and a shooting incident that marred the post-impeachment fallout.

Barack Abdullahi, 26 claims County Assembly Speaker Mohammed Roba shot him as a convoy was leaving the assembly premises during the chaos.

Isiolo Sub-County Police Commander Joseph Mwendwa confirmed the incident, stating that unknown individuals also stormed the assembly grounds, vandalised two vehicles, smashed windows, and made off with furniture and electronics.

Meanwhile, a Nyeri court recently reinstated embattled County Assembly Clerk Salad Boru Guracha, whose abrupt removal by the County Assembly Service Board is believed to be linked to the ongoing feud between Governor Guyo and Speaker Roba.

The latest developments have cast a shadow over Monday’s Senate session, which is now seen not only as a trial of the governor but a test of political maturity and institutional independence in Isiolo.
