Senate Kicks off Sonko Impeachment hearing

The fate of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko could be sealed in the coming days, as the senate today begun hearing Governor Mike Sonko’s impeachment motion – By Gerald Gekara.

In a presentation through lead counsel Ndegwa Njiru, Nairobi MCAs who signed off the impeachment, urged the Senate to uphold the decision, saying Sonko was not capable of holding office.

“In our proceedings Mr. Speaker Sir, it shall marvel overwhelmingly evidence to the fact that the Governor is not fit to continue holding this office. To the fact that the Governor has not only abrogated chapter six and the leadership and integrity act of the constitution but he has also fragrantly misconstrued and held in save in the manner that is contemptuous to the sovereignty of the people of Kenya,” he said.

Out of 122 MCAs, Njiru says 88 ward representatives who voted to impeach Governor Sonko were rightfully exercising their mandate.

“There is a price for everything and the price for accountability and transparency demands that the Governor should vacate office,” he said.

Sonko, represented by lawyer Harrison Kinyanjui, will submit his defense on Thursday.

Governor Sonko is accused of gross misconduct, gross violation of the constitution, abuse of office and committing crimes under the national law.

The governor has been at the center of an ugly battle with the NMS over the control of the city’s key functions. Despite signing off four key functions, Sonko is dismayed with constant cries that the National Government is undermining his position as the governor.

However, the NMS are on record saying their sole funtion was to provide services and not over look Mike Sonko’s authority.

Governor Sonko has been out of office for the better part of his tenure, and for this Nairobi MCAs say, has ground Nairobi county to a stop.
