Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has called a special sitting of the House to consider Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment motion, which was passed by the Meru County Assembly on Wednesday, December 14.
In a gazette notice dated December 16, Kingi announced that the sitting was called in response to a request from Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot and Meru County Assembly Speaker Ayub Bundi to deliberate on the matter.
The meeting will begin at 2:30 p.m. in the Senate’s main chambers in parliament, according to Kingi.
“I have appointed Tuesday, 20th December 2022 as a day for a special sitting of the Senate. ,” read part of the statement.
“The business to be transacted in the sitting shall be the hearing of the charges against Hon. Kawira Mwangaza of Meru County.”
Mwangaza was impeached on November 22, 2022, after 67 Meru MCAs voted in favor of her impeachment motion, which was first proposed by Abogeta West MCA Dennis Kiogora.
The motion was tabled on the grounds that the Governor had exceeded her constitutional powers.
Mwangaza’s fate is now in the hands of the Senate, which will decide whether to uphold or overturn the impeachment.
If the Senate rejects the impeachment motion, it cannot be reintroduced for three months on similar grounds.
The Senate may form a special committee of 11 Senators to investigate the matter, or it may consider the impeachment motion as a House.
A committee of this type would have up to ten days to report back to the House, and the governor would be given an opportunity to defend herself.
