Senator Cleophas Malala of Kakamega surrendered to police on Monday evening after being summoned by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) for allegedly making incendiary remarks on Sunday.
Malala, who had threatened to disrupt Francis Atwoli’s speech at Bukhungu Stadium on Friday, has now pledged to keep the peace, claiming that her Sunday words were merely political and that he never intended to incite violence.
The senator went to the Kakamega Central Police Station by himself.
“He (Malala) reiterated that what he said at the Maragoli Cultural Festival was a political statement and that he does not intend to use violence or incite his supporters to mayhem during the demonstration,” said David Kabena, Kakamega Central Sub-County Police Commander.
“Malala stated that he will keep the rally peaceful. He also stated that he will be in Mumias on Friday during the Bukhungu II event, which is 32 kilometres away from the conference,” added Kabena.
Senator Malala had threatened to cancel plans for the Bukhungu conference on Sunday, claiming that his party’s presidential candidate, Musalia Mudavadi, “had not been contacted.”
Malala’s “bedroom,” according to the legislator, is Kakamega, and he has a lot of power over who hosts political meetings in the county.
As a result, he was called by the NCIC for his incendiary remarks.
