Senators Urge Urgent Upgrade, Funding Boost for Nyahururu Referral Hospital

The Senate Health Committee has called for immediate infrastructural upgrades and increased funding for Nyahururu County Referral Hospital, citing its critical role in serving patients from Laikipia and seven surrounding counties.

During an oversight visit, the committee, led by Vice Chairperson Senator Mariam Sheik Omar—emphasized that the hospital is overwhelmed by demand from a broad catchment area that includes Nyandarua, Baringo, Samburu, Nakuru, Isiolo, Meru, and Nyeri counties. Senator Omar, who represents Mandera County, stressed the urgent need for a coordinated effort between the national and county governments to strengthen the hospital’s infrastructure, medical equipment, and human resources.

“This facility is playing a vital regional role and urgently needs more support,” said Omar. “The burden it carries is immense, and both levels of government must collaborate to ensure it is properly equipped to meet growing demand.”

The committee proposed the issuance of targeted grants to fast-track the hospital’s upgrading and pledged to include the recommendation in its forthcoming report to the Senate.

During the visit, several challenges were noted, including understaffing, a stretched mortuary, and limited access to affordable medication. Despite these hurdles, the committee praised the maternity wing for delivering high-quality care to mothers and newborns.
