Sonko fate to be decided by Senate plenary

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s fate is now in the hands of a plenary in the senate, as opposed to a committee. – By Gerald Gekara.

Governor Sonko is accused of abuse of office, a gross violation of the Constitution and gross misconduct.

All hell broke loose when he refused to approve the county’s budget, claiming the budget was bloated to benefit individuals disguised under the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS).

He said there was no way MCAs could allocate NMS Sh27 billion out of the Sh37.5 billion budget.

The governor has been at the center of an ugly battle with the NMS over the control of the city’s key functions. Despite signing off four key functions, Sonko is dismayed with constant cries that the National Government is undermining his position as the governor.

However, the NMS are on record saying their sole funtion was to provide services and not over look Mike Sonko’s authority.

Governor Sonko has been out of office for the better part of his tenure, seemingly throwing Nairobi county into limbo since the city has no deputy governor.
