Sonko Leaks: JSC Goes After Judge Chitembwe

Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has begun the process of removing Justice Chitembwe Said Juma from office.

The move follows graft charges leveled against him by former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko through a series of audio and video recordings.

On Monday, November 22, the JSC debated on a petition that was filed attempting to oust him based on allegations of impropriety and egregious misconduct.

Chitembwe, who was once considered a candidate for the country’s Chief Justice post, was granted the right to respond by the JSC, which required him to produce a thorough response to the allegations within 14 days after serving.

Chief Justice Martha Karambu Koome had already issued a statement assuring Kenyans that she will act in response to Sonko’s video recordings incriminating the High Court Judge.

She repeated her position on the issue during the Supreme Court’s admission of 255 lawyers to the roll of advocates on Monday, November 22, saying that the Judiciary will act forcefully, quickly, and equitably with charges against judges.

“Any charges or cases that link anyone inside the Judiciary in illicit conduct will be dealt with sternly and immediately, but equitably,” CJ Koome warned.

Sonko taped a meeting with the Judge’s brother in which he solicited and received a bribe on the Judge’s behalf. The video would become a topic of conversation on social media and in the mainstream media.

Prior to the JSC’s most recent exposes, two people petitioned the court to remove Chitembwe from the bench.
