Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo are expected to at the IEBC offices as the race for Mombasa Governor heats up.
The IEBC will officially approve the two candidates to vie in the August 9 General Elections.
This follows a High Court ruling on Wednesday that overturned the commission’s decision to disqualify Sonko from running for Mombasa Governor.
With 26 days until the election, the Wiper’s candidate faces no obstacles, with IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati ruling out appealing the court’s decision.
According to Chebukati, the commission is not interested in appealing the High Court ruling allowing Sonko to run because the electoral body is currently facing serious time constraints in terms of printing ballot papers.
IEBC CEO Marjan Hussein Marjan, for his part, added that the Commission has backup kits in case any systems fail on the material day.
The former county boss, who was impeached two years ago on allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office, was given a last-minute opportunity to be on the ballot in the August 9 election, rendering the IEBC returning officer Swalhah Yusuf’s decision to bar him null and void.
In a major victory, Justices Olga Sewe, Ann Onginjo, and Erastus Githinji ruled that Sonko was duly qualified to run for Mombasa governor in the August 9 elections.
Furthermore, the judges ordered IEBC to clear Sonko, who they determined had met all legal requirements to run for the seat.
