Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has cleared the fine that a 21-year-old man was slapped with for shoplifting at Naivas Supermarket along Moi Avenue in Nairobi.
Alvin Linus Chivondo was handed a 1-year sentence with an alternative of a Ksh 100,000 fine by Milimani Law Courts after he pleaded guilty to stealing 5kgs of rice, 5 liters of cooking oil, and 2kgs of sugar, and other items valued at Ksh 3,165.
Sonko, who is said to be seeking the Mombasa County governor’s seat at the August polls, cleared the Ksh.100, 000 fine instituted by the court and stated that he cleared Chivondo’s fine out of goodwill and not for clout.
The Ex-governor also gave Chivondo one month of shopping adding that he will also offer him a well-paying job.
“Majority of Kenyans are languishing in poverty even affording a daily meal for their families is a problem, it is because of this reason that I decided to pay the fine for Alvin,” said Sonko.
Chivondo had been charged with two counts of stealing and handling stolen goods.
