Sports CS Amina Mohammed among contenders of WTO top seat

Amina Mohamed, currently the Sports CS is among the contenders eyeing the World Trade Organisation(WTO) Director General post following the unexpected departure of Roberto Azevedo – By Prudence Wanza.

Amina has previously served as Trade CS and Foreign Affairs CS respectively and if she succeeds she will WTO’s first female leader.

Amina will further be seeking support from African governments.

In a report by Financial Times, she said its time the organizations rule book changed.

“it is important to be inclusive and show that the membership knows that every part of the globe can make a positive contribution to the running of the WTO.” She said during an interview with the publication.

The CS said WTO needed a director General with great expertise in working within the organization.

” We need someone with the right experience, someone who is committed to the multilateral system…but also has the political stature to be an effective facilitator and a consensus-builder,” she said

“If that person happens to be African, or happens to be a woman. I think it will be so much better,”… It is important to be inclusive and show that the membership knows that every part of the globe can make a positive contribution to the running of the WTO.” She said in the interview

Other contenders include Peter Mandelson, the British former EU trade commissioner.
