Standard Media threatens to sack radio presenters for boycotting shows over unpaid salaries

Standard Media Group has threatened to fire all presenters from its affiliate radio stations after they in solidarity, walked out of the morning shows on Thursday, July 4, 2024.

The radio presenters drawn from Radio Maisha, Spice FM, Berur FM and Vybez Radio converged at the cafeteria and sought to be addressed by management on the settlement of their unpaid salaries.

The presenters had made good on their threat on June 28, going off the air until the Mombasa Road-based media house settled their dues, some of which date back to 2023.

In response, Standard Media Group management addressed the journalists, threatening to terminate their contracts should they fail to return to work.

The radio presenters had walked out, leaving music playing live on air.

According to reports, the media house had failed to pay its journalists for the period between June and August 2023, and in 2024, they had reportedly been paid only for February.

The journalists sought to have their June 2024 salaries remitted before July 2. They asked the media house to pay 30 per cent of their pending salaries monthly until the amount is cleared.

“Kindly note that in the event of non-payment as proposed above, all programming will be off air on July 3, on all 4 radio stations until our plight is addressed and a commitment from your end is issued in writing,” the employees had earlier warned.
