The State Department for Industrialisation, in collaboration with the University of Nairobi, conducted a post-event on the 27th of August 2021 to commemorate International Youth Day (IYD).
The event, which is observed annually on the 12th of August, is held to recognize the importance of youngsters in addressing global concerns and attaining long-term development.
“Harnessing The Power of SMEs and Cottage Industries in Spurring Regional Development,” was the theme of the post-event.
The day is intended to bring the government and other stakeholders together to interact with the youth on issues that concern them and how they may contribute to the solutions.

It aims at ensuring proper government policies are targeted toward youth in order to provide them with full access to education, healthcare, employment, and financial services.
Hon. Charles Suntuli, Principle Secretary, State Department Youth Affairs, who was in attendance, praised Kenyan youth for being energetic and imaginative, particularly in Cottage Industries.
Hon. Suntuli added that the government offers numerous incentives to young people working in the manufacturing sector.
Principal Secretary, State Department Industrialization, Kirimi Peter Kaberia urged the creation of the right environment for universities to be truly an oasis of ideas and opportunities that create products, jobs, and solutions to the challenges that confront the society.
He added that the cottage industries and SMEs have the potential of turning around the economy to provide employment for the skilled and talented youth as they constitute the leading form of economic development.
He added that SMEs constitute over 90% of the enterprise.
He challenged the youth to take advantage of the opportunities offered to become entrepreneurs.
