Gender Cabinet Secretary nominee Stella Soi Lang’at has highlighted the need to tackle poverty in communities. She believes this is essential to combat early marriages and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
During her vetting by the National Assembly Committee on Appointments on Sunday, Lang’at connected high poverty rates with these harmful practices.
“Many communities with high poverty levels consider girls as financial investments,” she stated.
Lang’at called for a holistic approach. She emphasized the importance of empowering both men and women, especially men, in supporting community development and protecting girls.
She shared her own background, expressing that male support is vital for female empowerment. “I am a daughter of a mechanic. Without the support of a male figure, women struggle to protect girls,” she noted.
To help girls succeed, Lang’at insisted on ensuring that every community has accessible schools. She also advocated for providing essential supplies, such as sanitary towels. This would help girls transition into puberty more comfortably.
Additionally, she pointed out the need to engage women who carry out FGM. Offering them alternative income opportunities could help reduce the practice. Lang’at underscored the importance of raising awareness in communities where FGM is still prevalent.
If confirmed, Stella Soi Lang’at’s strategies might lead to significant changes. Her initiatives could promote gender equality and empower communities across Kenya.
