Rongo Magistrate Court delivers harsh sentence in case involving betrayal of trust
RONGO, Migori County – A 36-year-old man has been sentenced to 40 years imprisonment for defiling his 13-year-old stepdaughter in a case that has shocked the local community.
Principal Magistrate Susan Mutava delivered the sentence at Rongo Magistrate Court after the prosecution successfully proved the case beyond reasonable doubt. The crime was committed on February 22, 2025, in Rongo Sub County within Migori County.
Ms. Juliet Ombogo, representing the prosecution, presented compelling evidence through testimonies from six witnesses, including the victim herself. During the trial, the minor courageously recounted how her stepfather repeatedly defiled her, manipulating her with promises of buying mandazi and giving her money for personal use.
The court noted the particularly disturbing nature of the case, emphasizing that the accused had violated the trust placed in him as a guardian. Magistrate Mutava observed that the stepfather was expected to provide love and protection to the child, but instead exploited his position of authority to commit these heinous acts.
“The minor had her innocence taken from her by her stepfather, who was expected to offer her love and protection,” the magistrate stated, noting that his actions fell far below acceptable societal standards.
The case highlights the vulnerability of children within their own homes and the devastating impact of sexual abuse by trusted family members. The manipulation tactics used by the accused – offering treats and money – demonstrate the calculated nature of the abuse.
The 40-year sentence reflects the severity of the crime and serves as a strong deterrent to others who might consider exploiting children in their care. The conviction also represents the justice system’s commitment to protecting minors from sexual predators, particularly those who abuse positions of trust within the family structure.
This case underscores the importance of creating safe spaces for children to report abuse and ensuring that the justice system responds decisively to protect society’s most vulnerable members.
