Street Preacher Charged With Bible Theft

Augustine Wanyonyi who claims to have been forced by circumstances to join street preaching was arraigned in Court today with allegations of stealing two bibles.

Particulars of the offense are that on 30th January 2022 he stole two copies of Good News bibles from Naivas Supermarket along Moi Avenue. 

The prosecution submitted that he went there posing like a customer and requested to be directed to the bible shelves. He proceeded to pick two copies of good news bible valued at Ksh 1200 and hid them under his pants. 

He was caught up in CCTV and after the search the two copies were recovered. He was arrested and booked at central police station.

He was arraigned in Court and pleaded guilty for the offense.

The prosecution further told the Court that the accused is a serial shoplifter. For instance, on 29thNovember 2021, he was charged with a similar offense.

In his mitigation, the accused claimed that after his first arrest in 2021, all of his properties were destroyed and his house demolished. He proceeded to say he has been seeking jobs in vain. Hence deciding to become a street pastor. A decision which saw him steal the bibles to start the profession.

Asked by the Court why he had to steal two copies if at all he needed a holy book for the business, he said that one was for his wife whom he wanted to team up with.

The court ordered for his detention to give way for probation report before sentencing.
