Suarez gave his verdict on the Liverpool captain

Speaking to UEFA, Luis Suarez has been speaking about Liverpool ahead of his return to Anfield in the Champions League this week.

Suarez is undoubtedly an Anfield legend, he had an amazing three-and-a-half years at the club and he almost guided the Reds to a Premier League title.

Seven years on from his departure, most of the players Suarez used to share a dressing room with have either moved on or retired, but one man who remains at the club is Jordan Henderson.

Suarez has had nothing but good things to say about Henderson ahead of this game.

“I think he’s a player who’s improved a great deal. When he joined Liverpool, he came with the tag of somebody who had cost a lot of money. He was a young, English, coming from Sunderland. This may have put some pressure on him, but as he grew in confidence with the team, he took many things from Gerrard, and from experienced players such as Carragher. He took things on board from me,” Suarez said.

“I think that, as a captain, he has matured a lot. During his career, he has helped the club grow, with his personality and playing better football. He’s a role model for English football. Winning a Premier League title with Liverpool must have been fantastic for him, and it’s made him greater than he already was.”

Suarez is absolutely right about Henderson.

Back when Suarez was at the club, it’s fair to say Henderson wasn’t really anything special. After all, Liverpool did try to offer him to Fulham in a swap-deal for Clint Dempsey.

However, since getting the captain’s armband, Henderson has proven himself to be a brilliant leader on the pitch, while his performances have improved by some way since he began working with Jurgen Klopp.

Henderson is now one of the best midfielders in the country and Suarez seemingly recognises his brilliance now.
