Suspect Behind Mombasa Blogger Gang Rape Charged Torture

Omar Ali Mohamed, also known as Nyanya, was arraigned at Shanzu Law Courts today, facing multiple serious charges including abduction, gang rape, and conspiracy to commit a felony.

This revelation comes on the heels of his identification by four victims who reported torture and abuse at the hands of the accused on August 15, 2024, at Mikindani Police Station.

The victims allege that Omar, alongside accomplices, was enforcing the County Government of Mombasa bylaws when they subjected them to brutal treatment at the Mombasa County Inspectorate offices in Tudor.

The harrowing accounts have triggered a strong response from local law enforcement, leading to the recent apprehension of Omar Ali.

During today’s proceedings, the court addressed charges of torture under Section 5 (1) of the Prevention of Torture Act No. 12 of 2017. Omar pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The presiding magistrate granted him a bond of Sh500,000 or an alternative cash bail of Sh200,000; however, he was returned to remand as the prosecution argued he posed a flight risk and could potentially interfere with ongoing investigations.

The court will re-examine Omar’s bond application regarding blogger Bruce Khajira’s case on Friday, November 15, 2024.

Investigations into both the current allegations and those related to Khajira are progressing, and law enforcement is actively seeking multiple accomplices connected to these troubling incidents.
