Malindi: German Conservationist Decries Poor Waste Management

"Recently I was walking on another road and I stepped on a banana peel I fell down and my nose was nearly inside some pampers"

Poor waste disposal in Malindi has angered an investor who now calls it a shame.

The investor, a German conservationist who has lived in Malindi for over 40 years is now protesting over the continued pile of waste in the resort town.

Silvia Pirelli who owns the L’Magiro conservation center in Mere claims the idea of people dumping waste carelessly in the town is harming the good image of the tourist resort town.

She took her bitterness to the streets and went with journalists to some of the dumping centres where she sat in the middle of the waste and expressed her anger over the poor dumping of waste by the people.

In the interview, Pirelli said Malindi does not deserve such poor waste disposal as it was spoiling the good image of the resort town.

“Is this really what we want in this beautiful town? Malindi is so beautiful but this has to stop, I remember about 20 years ago I was here in Malindi I came and I made a mark and I think people will remember me I was working at the time with the town manager (mayor) was Gideon Mung’aro we worked together we cleaned the town it was relatively nice,” she said.

The conservationist said the law has to be enacted by the National and county government to put into task the people to take care of their waste from their homes.

She said monthly clean-ups which is has been part of but quit are not solutions to the proem of waste management.

Pirelli said for the last 20 years the problem has not been solved because people have failed to take responsibility for the waste from their homes.

The conservationist said she is annoyed because to date there is still garbage being dumped everywhere.

“Recently I was walking on another road and I stepped on a banana peel I fell down and my nose was nearly inside some pampers, I really got annoyed I said we have to do something,” she said.

She said they did clean-ups during the tenure of Malindi Mayor Gideon Mung’aro (now aspiring to be Governor of Kilifi), and then in recent years cleaned with the Malindi Green and Blue.

Pirelli wondered how many years are people going to be doing clean-ups yet people do not change.

The conservationist said she has gone to many offices in Malindi, Kilifi, and Nairobi but nobody listened to her

“I was in Germany I went round and took pictures of some good ideas of how we can solve the problems, I brought them back even Judy Wakhungu she knows very well I sent her all the pictures I don’t know how many years I will be working on this am getting fed up because if people are not listening to me I n have to go viral,” she said.

She said with a law in place that prohibits reckless dumping of waste and which will ensure every house owner is responsible for his own waste.

The conservationist said the municipality must not be the one to be in charge of cleaning garbage because cleaning must begin from the household level.

“We have to learn how to stop this and it is by making a law that clearly states that it is not allowed to throw things on the ground anymore we are grownups we need to teach the children at home and at school,” she said.

She also called for a total ban on plastic straws, and plastic bottles, as they contribute a lot to the effects on the environment.

Pirelli said she was ready to share her ideas on waste management and called on any authority ready to listen to engage her so as to get a permanent solution.

She said dumping areas must not be in the middle of the town anywhere and suggested that there have to be dustbins at home where litter is separated and thrown at the right places.
