Tension has continued to rise high in Mombasa with a new gang known as the 86 battalion emerging.
On Sunday the gang is believed to have carried out an attack in Kisauni and Nyali in Mombasa leaving ten people severely injured.
The victims are said to have suffred deep cuts on their head, hands ,legs and other parts of their body.
An eye witness recoerde by the Daily Nation said that one of the victim had his leg chopped off by the criminals.
“We had to put the leg in a carton as we carried the victims to the hospital after the morning attack,” the witness is quoted to have said
The victims were taken to the Coast general hospital and they are all responding to treatment.
However, the criminals were later traced to their hideout in Mwandoni where fire exchange occurred as they fled. Mombsa County Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo said that six thugs were belived to have escaped with gunshot wounds.
“They were caught sharing the loot. The officers ordered them to surrender but they advanced towards the officers. the officers fired at them and it is suspected that several of them escaped with gunshot wounds,” Mr. Kitiyo said.
Several items belonging to the victims such as; Identification Cards, NHIF and ATM cards were recovered.
Police also indicated that four pangas and a metal bar were also recovered and they are still in pursuit of the criminals.
The new wave of attacks came barely weeks after another one in August that left over 13 people nursing injuries. Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matinag’i held a joint meeting with Mombasa leaders which led to a series of transfers among security officers in the county.
During the meeting Matiang’i assured the residents zero attacks in the region which seems the promise is yet to materialize if the latest attack is anything to go by.
The gangsters are now increasing at a very first rate and all of are common in that they use machetes and crude weapons to carry out their attacks.
