Three people have been confirmed dead after a bus was attacked in a recent bus attack in Nyogoro area, Lamu County.
According to local authorities, two others were injured and are being treated at local clinics.
The ill-fated bus was travelling from Mombasa when heavily armed men stopped it and opened fire at the bus.
It is suspected that the attack may have been carried out by suspected Al – Shabaab militants, owing to the pattern of the attacks.
Local authorities say security forces are pursuing the attackers, who are reported to have fled the scene.
While condoling with the families of the bereaved, Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho took to twitter to condemn the act.
“I am extremely saddened by news of yet another suspected terror attack that targeted a bus transporting passengers to Lamu. Several people are believed to have been killed and many others injured in the incident that occurred earlier today at Nyongoro area. ” said the Governor.
The country has been on high alert over the Christmas and New Year holiday period, following intelligence reports that al-Shabab could carry out attacks.
The Al- Shabaab, who are suspected to be behind the heinous act, claimed responsibility for Saturday’s enormous car bombing in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu that killed at least 81 people.
