Tokyo Olympics: US Suffer Shocking Water Polo Defeat

The United States women’s water polo team, arguably the most dominant team in the world regardless of sport, was defeated by Hungary in a 10-9 thriller.

This is their first Olympic defeat since 2008.

Despite going 2-1 in group play, the squad is still guaranteed a position in the bracket.

The Americans led 8-6 going into the fourth quarter, but their usually strong offense — which had scored 37 goals in their first two games — fell silent as Hungary scored four goals.

The Americans shot 9-of-31 as a team, and only 4-of-11 with an extra player.

The good news for the US is that the loss won’t hurt them at all; they’re still in first place in Group B, and a win over Russia on Friday will keep them there. Still, it’s not a team that loses frequently.
