2.5 million wildebeests are set to migrate from Tanzania’s northern Serengeti plains to the Mara River and Sand River Gate crossing sites to begin the season.

However, lodges in Masai Mara National Reserve are unlikely to open their doors for the full July-September peak season.

Due to a lack of business, high-end lodges and camps have yet to receive bookings or intend to return workers who were placed on unpaid vacation last year.

In his briefing, the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson stated that he is still debating whether or not to lift the restrictions his government has placed on residents in order to combat the Delta variant soon, allowing them to go outside of the UK.

After the outbreak of Covid-19, which led the government to ban local and international flights, the majority of the reserve’s approximately 200 hotels shuttered in March of last year owing to a lack of revenue caused by non-arrivals.

Hotels were kept afloat by local visitors until the beginning of the year, when some international visits began.

Meanwhile, tour operators have requested the government to provide tax assistance to all tourist industry participants owing to a lack of business in the previous two years, alleging that most firms have failed as a result of Covid-19’s impacts.
