A coalition of American small businesses, including prominent tabletop game makers, filed a lawsuit on Thursday against President Donald Trump and his administration, challenging the legality of tariffs imposed on imports from China.
The group alleges the tariffs are “unlawful and unconstitutional,” and argues they are placing severe financial strain on their operations.
Among the plaintiffs are well-known tabletop companies such as Stonemaier Games, Spielcraft Games, Rookie Mage Games, XYZ Game Labs, and Tinkerhouse.
The lawsuit details the heavy financial burdens they face, citing tariffs as high as 145 percent on imported goods.
For example, Stonemaier Games estimates it will pay millions in tariffs on shipments ready to leave China, while Spielcraft Games and Rookie Mage Games have already incurred thousands in recent tariffs.
Other plaintiffs include Princess Awesome, a children’s clothing company, and Mischief Toy Store of Saint Paul, Minnesota. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. Court of International Trade.
This legal action adds to mounting opposition to the tariffs. Just a day earlier, 12 U.S. states filed a separate lawsuit, with New York Attorney General Letitia James labeling the tariffs as “unlawful.”
Industry leaders, such as the CEO of Learning Resources, have described the tariff policy as “catastrophic” for American businesses.
Amid these challenges, there are indications the Trump administration may be considering a reduction in tariffs, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.
The outcome of the lawsuits could have significant implications for small businesses across the nation.
