Traffic Police Officer Arrested For Allegedly Demanding Bribe

Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested a traffic police officer on Thursday for allegedly demanding a bribe from a motorist whose vehicle he had impounded.

Corporal Dobin Peter Naibei, an officer assigned to the Shauri Moyo Police Traffic Base, is said to have detained the vehicle because it lacked a valid driver’s licence.

He allegedly asked for the bribe in order to ‘facilitate’ the vehicle’s release.

However, after refusing to give in to Naibei’s demands, the complainant reported the incident to EACC.

EACC detectives later apprehended the suspect, who faces bribery charges, and detained him at Kilimani Police Station until his case is heard at the Commission on Friday.

Confirming the arrest, EACC Spokesperson Eric Ngumbi stated that the Commission is increasing patrols on highways across the country during the holiday season in order to enforce anti-corruption laws.

“The Commission notes that some motorists deliberately violate traffic laws and then seek to bribe their way of law enforcement actions. In this regard, motorists are advised to comply with all traffic laws and report any suspected incidents of corruption to EACC for action,” said Ngumbi on Friday.

“The Commission will continue to work closely with the Inspector General of Police and other Government Offices in taming the menace of traffic corruption which not only affects motorists but hurts the country’s image.”
