Treasury launches Kenya’s first Civil Servants insurance cover

Kenya has finally implemented the country’s first comprehensive insurance cover for civil servants to enhance public service motivation. By Gerald Gekara.

National Treasury and Planning CS Ukur Yatani presided over the colourful event held at the Serena Hotel, Nairobi. He said the launch of the cover will impact productivity among other benefits among civil servants.

“The launch of the enhanced insurance cover with the inclusion of Work Injury Benefits and Group Accident Cover will not only have a profound impact on the well-being of civil servants and their families, enhance public service motivation, and productivity but also boost the general growth of our insurance industry,”

The insurance cover came at a time when civil servants are ravaged by the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, that has had negative effects. The cover would cushion Kenyans working in the civil service from adverse effects in future.

“I indeed, recall that at the onset of the pandemic, the National Treasury & Planning alongside other key stakeholders was tasked by the President to look into ways in which to cushion these workers, by taking care of their health and insurance requirements especially during this challenging times of COVID-19,”

The cover will also cater for workers at the National Youth Service (NYS).

Civil servants and employees of the National Youth Service will have a comprehensive insurance cover with a total annual premium of Ksh. 6.07billion per year.

The cover will be liased with a sort of co-insurance model of around 30 insurance companies. The move has been lauded for its efforts to ensure growth in the insurance industry.
