WASHINGTON
President Donald Trump on Wednesday proposed a historic increase in U.S. military spending, calling for a defense budget of $1.5 trillion for 2027.
He cited “troubled and dangerous times” to justify the massive surge, which would represent a nearly 70 percent increase over the current $901 billion budget.
The proposal follows a series of aggressive military and geopolitical moves by the Trump administration in recent days, including a failed operation to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and ongoing naval deployments to the Caribbean.

The president has also revived interest in acquiring Greenland from Denmark and suggested openness to military action in Colombia, while his Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, issued a stark warning about Cuba.
“This will allow us to build the ‘Dream Military’ that we have long been entitled to and, more importantly, that will keep us SAFE and SECURE, regardless of foe,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social announcing the plan.
The proposal comes just one year after the military received a $175 billion increase as part of a major GOP tax and spending bill signed by Trump.
