Public health officers and partners in Turkana County have pledged to step up their efforts to eliminate open defecation.
In order to do this, they want to announce open defecation-free status in at least 40 communities in Turkana Central over the next 30 days.
Turkana Central Public Health Officers have identified 40 communities within the sub-county that will be educated on the necessity of using latrines in order to improve the villages’ prospects of becoming Open Defecation Free (ODF).
The villages were identified during a Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) assessment conference for World Vision Kenya’s Wash, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) programme, which has been supported by Unicef since September 2021.
Prior to January 2022, the crew has successfully triggered the aforementioned 40 settlements. Triggering involves informing the public about the health risks associated with open defecation.
Innocent Sifuna, Deputy Director of Public Health, urged the 40 PHOs in attendance to certify the communities as ODF within two months of the project’s end on March 31, 2022.
He guaranteed them of his support and thanked them for their efforts, which had resulted in the accreditation of 709 communities since the program’s inception in 2017.
