The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has been urged to conduct free and fair elections.
Lamu Governor Fahim Twaha said after he was cleared by the agency that it was important that IEBC conducts the election in a transparent manner.
The Governor said it was very important for the elections to be free and fair adding that even though Kenya was a free state at times corruption amongst some officials who go against the will of people who stand under the scorching heat of the sun to vote.
“We are asking the officials to try to be free and fair, if someone has defeated us in the right way let him be declared the winner and if we win in a rightful way, we deserve to be declared the winners,” he said.
The Governor who is seeking reelection on a Jubilee Party ticket also called on all the people in Lamu and the entire country at large to conduct peaceful campaigns.
He said there was no need for people to develop hatred against one another but choose leadership with the best policies that are going to transform lives.
“Let all politicians sell their policies and not tribalism, religion, and spreading hatred aimed at dividing people,” he said.
“We are happy that we have fulfilled all the requirements that will enable our names to be on the ballot now what remains is to go to the people to ask them to add more time for us to complete the work.” He said.
Twaha who was accompanied by his Deputy Governor and Haji Mahmoud earlier arrived at the Lamu fort with hundreds of supporters in song and dance carrying placards in support of his re-election.
They marked along the seafront and danced all the way to the venue and braved the morning rains to wait for the outcome of the clearance.
When they came out of the IEBC clearance room, they again marched along with the Lamu Fort in excitement despite the showers of rains that were still going on.
The Governor said he was happy that the people had faith in him and have been electing him since 1997 which now marks his sixth election.
“I have been faithful and worked very hard for the people that’s why they still have confidence in me that I am able to discharge this responsibility in a good way,” he said.
He said they will continue executing the policies they have but have 0other new ideas which they would announce during their rallies to prevent their opponents to know their secrets for now.
Twaha is the second candidate to be cleared after former Lamu Governor Issa Timammy of ANC who was the first to be cleared.
The others are Umra Omar of Safina Party who is the first woman to vie for the top county seat and Eric Mugo a former deputy Governor of Timammy who now wants to be governor on a Narc Kenya ticket.
