12 Uber drivers were today arraigned in Court and charged with threatening breach of peace during a demonstration they had staged yesterday.
The 12 suspects; Geofrey Gucha, Jaafar Sadat, Stanilas Kimani, Simon Mwangi, Dennis Mbuto, Paul Misati Mustafa Odhiambo, Robert Njenga, Raphael Musyoka, Jeff Oroka, Peter Mwangi and John Maina are part of online drivers who took collective action complaining of mistreatment from their online Taxi App partners.
They were charged with creating disturbance in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by barricading Bishop Road with stones and burning Tyres during their demonstrations.
Appearing before SPM Robinson Ondieki at Milimani Law Courts, the accused drivers pleaded not guilty and were released on Ksh 3,000 cash bail.
The drivers, also known as captains, were voicing their frustration, stating that repeated meetings with their online taxi app partners, including Bolt, Uber, and Faras, have failed to yield satisfactory results.
Key among the captains’ grievances are the low commissions offered by the ride-hailing apps, which they argue are insufficient given the rising inflation in the country.
Despite multiple attempts to negotiate fairer terms, the drivers claim their concerns have been dismissed, leading them to take collective action.
The case will proceed on September 25, 2024.
