Police are investigating an incident in which a mob killed two police officers at Kanthanje market in Igambang’ombe, Tharaka Nithi on Saturday evening.
The two officers, who were not in uniform at the time of the incident, had gone to an MPesa shop to arrest the operator when a disturbance started, according to Deputy County Commissioner Julius Arap Too.
The MPesa attendant reportedly raised the alarm, claiming that the officers were thieves, prompting a mob to descend on the officers and beat them mercilessly.
The MPesa attendant is also said to have been injured during the Saturday evening incident and is currently being treated at Materi Hospital.
“I can confirm that two people, reportedly police officers attached to Kathwana police station, have been killed by a mob at Kanthanje market. We are yet to confirm their identity. I have personally taken an injured civilian to St Orsola Hospital, Materi,” Mr Arap Too said.
Area OCPD Joseph Muchiri stated that investigations are underway, but the victims have yet to be identified.
“We have launched investigations into the incident but we are not able to immediately tell what happened because we found a deserted market with the two bodies on the ground,” said Mr Muchiri.
