The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has demanded that the Ministry of Interior and other relevant authorities investigate and prosecute those responsible for the chaos and violence at Deputy President William Ruto’s Embakasi rally on Sunday.
During a press conference, the party’s Chairperson, Johnstone Muthama, called Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi to guarantee that the perpetrators be brought to justice, while also urging political tolerance.
Secretary General Veronica Maina called the mayhem as expertly planned, while calling attention to the DP’s rival Raila Odinga.
“Kenyans are watching to see whether Interior cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiangi, who has publicly supported Raila Odinga quest for presidency will drop his political hat and act to save Kenyans from his political master’s crusade for violence. This trend is not acceptable,” Maina stated.
“The minister, despite being entrusted with maintaining peace and order has continued to remain silent and is in no doubt emerging as a cheerleader of such intolerant and unacceptable behavior.”
As the country prepares for the August 9 General Elections, she emphasized that such actions will not be condoned.
On Sunday, Ruto’s Jacaranda rally in Nairobi was briefly disrupted by a rival group forcing police to deploy teargas to disperse them.
Raila, according to Ruto, is to fault for inciting violence among his supporters in his perceived strongholds.
“I want to tell Odinga that your attempt to gain public office via the use of violence will fail.” This group of young people you’re employing to throw stones is only available to you for the next six months; after that, they’ll be unavailable because we’ll be giving them jobs,” Ruto stated.
