Ugandan Man Who Breached Museveni’s State Lodge Remanded

A 40-year-old salesman, Shafik Bwanika, is behind bars at Luzira prison after allegedly trespassing at Nakasero State Lodge, the official residence of Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

Bwanika, a resident of Makindye, pleaded not guilty to charges of criminal trespass and threatening violence during his arraignment at Buganda Road Court.

Prosecutors allege that on April 30th, Bwanika drove his car onto the State Lodge grounds, a restricted area. The prosecution claims his intention was to intimidate or annoy the president.

The situation reportedly escalated when Bwanika allegedly threatened a guard, Pte Abas Ssekanjajo, with his vehicle. According to court documents, Ssekanjajo, a Special Forces Command guard, opened fire on Bwanika’s car in response.

Tragically, a woman riding with Bwanika was shot during the incident.

Bwanika will remain in custody until his next court date on May 29th, 2024. The state has indicated that their investigation is complete, and the hearing is expected to begin then.

This story is still developing, and further details may emerge as the case progresses.
