Former President Uhuru Kenyatta is scheduled to arrive in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, on Sunday as part of a peace delegation.
The former Kenyan Defense Forces Commander-in-Chief will meet with President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Other actors involved in the peace process and security in Eastern DRC will be present at the meeting.
He is also expected to meet with nearly fifty representatives of Ituri, North and South Kivu communities, as well as heads of institutions.
The meeting comes as the first batch of Kenyan troops is deployed to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to fight M23 rebels in a joint regional operation.
General Robert Kibochi, Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, greeted the team at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Gen Kibochi reminded the troops of their joint mission to enforce peace with the other East African Community states.
“We are well-known for adhering to the law wherever we go. Wherever you go, respect the chiefs of defense,” Kibochi said.
The departure was approved by the National Assembly Defence Committee in response to a request from President William Ruto.
In June, as EAC chair, Uhuru called for the deployment of the East African Regional Force to the DRC to combat growing insecurity.
According to the former President, the hostilities threaten to undermine the ongoing political process aimed at addressing the security situation.
