Former President Uhuru Kenyattaflew to Burundi on Friday to meet with President Evariste Ndayishimiye, the chairman of the East African Community Heads of State Summit, to discuss the crisis in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
According to communivations from Burundi, President Evariste Ndayishimiye will be meeting today with former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who is currently the EAC facilitator on the peace process in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Mr Kenyatta is accompanied by the East African Community Secretary-General, Peter Mathuki, according to the Burundi state house.
The EAC member countries’ presidents are expected to meet and study the parameters of a coordinated and sustainable response, which will be followed by an extraordinary summit of heads of state.
This comes as the armed conflict between DRC forces and M23 rebels in the country’s east intensifies, forcing thousands of people to flee.
Congolese residents in Goma, a region bordering Rwanda, staged protests, burning Rwandan flags and calling on Rwanda and Uganda to stop supporting the M23 rebels.
Kinshasa accuses Rwanda of backing the M23 rebels, allegations which Rwanda denies vehemently.
