President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed the Ministry of Interior Cordination to arrest any politician or public officer found flouting laid down COVID-19 guidelines – By Gerald Gekara.
In his highly anticipated address after meeting county heads, President Uhuru Kenyatta expressed disgust in members of the political class for flouting the Ministry of Health directives.
As a result, President Uhuru extended the ban against holding social and political gatherings.
The president also announced an extension of the Nationwide curfew for another 30 days, running from 9.00 pm to 4.00 am.
Eateries and restaurants will remain open but the President on Monday changed their hour from 8.00 pm to 7.00 pm effective midnight.
Sale of alcohol within eateries has been banned for 30 days, and bars would still remain closed until further notice.
Uhuru also directed the Ministry of Education to defer the reopening of universities to January 2021. He told the Education ministry to facilitate this and ensure online learning and graduations continue.
In terms of county preparedness, he instructed the Health Ministry to Health ministry to develop a protocol to temporarily retain ICU staff and anesthetists within the devolved units.
Other guidelines, however, still remained in place.
The Ministry of Health has reported 440 new COVID-19 infections. So far, 17,975 cases have been reported in Kenya.
