On Saturday, retired President Uhuru Kenyatta gave the strongest indication yet that he remains a member of the Azimio coalition.
The former president acknowledged his place in Azimio by referring to opposition leader Raila Odinga as his party leader.
“My brother, my friend, my party leader Raila Odinga, fellow mourners, we are here today to join you in celebrating the life of a great son,”.Uhuru said in his opening remarks.
The move may surprise some Jubilee politicians who have stated their desire for the party to leave Azimio.
The retired president’s remarks indicated that his Jubilee party is still a member of the Azimio coalition, despite elected MPs’ plans for it to leave.
On Friday, a group of Jubilee MPs met in Naivasha and announced the party’s intention to leave Azimio.
They also announced plans to hold a special national delegates convention to ratify a working arrangement with the government of President William Ruto.
The MPs also fired Jubilee secretary general Jeremiah Kioni, who was replaced in an acting capacity by Kanini Kega.
They also suspended vice-chairman David Murathe, who was replaced by Eldas MP Adan Keynan.
