President Uhuru Kenyatta and First Lady Mama Margaret Kenyatta arrived at Parliament buildings on Monday morning to lead Kenyans in a public viewing of the body of the country’s third President Mwai Kibaki.
The Head of State was received outside Parliament Buildings by his deputy-turned-political rival, William Ruto, but in a rare occurrence, the two did not shake hands.
Instead, the President bowed with his hands clasped together as a form of greeting, which he did to all leaders present including Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka and his National Assembly Justin Muturi.
The gesture goes to ascertain that all is indeed not well, since the two have been trading jabs over Uhuru Succession politics.
Leaders from William Ruto’s side made note of the gesture that has since gone viral on social media.
The solemn procession left Lee Funeral Home at about 7.05 a.m. and went through Valley Road, Kenyatta Avenue and Uhuru Highway through to Parliament Road.
Religious leaders from different faiths arrived soon after the body had arrived to facilitate religious rites ahead of the ceremonial removal of the body from the casket in readiness for public viewing.
Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, Chief Justice Martha Koome, Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, Chief of Defence Forces Robert Kibochi are among leader present.
