An international group of scientists has warned that the UK’s decision to lift most Covid restrictions on July 19 constitutes a “risk to the world.”
The government is targeting herd immunity by mass infection, according to the group, which includes official government consultants from nations such as Italy and Australia.
It slams Boris Johnson’s “reckless” decision to go forward with “independence day” despite increased infection rates, hospitalizations, and deaths.
Earlier, England’s top medical officer, Chris Whitty, warned that the current coronavirus outbreak may put the country “into difficulty surprisingly quickly.”
He advised people to proceed with prudence as the end of the lockdown approaches, citing the fact that the number of Covid patients in hospitals is currently tripling every three weeks.
Prof Whitty added that on July 19, when masks will no longer be required, the key is to “take things really slowly,” adding that he expects most people to continue to take measures.
It comes amid concerns that the NHS Covid-19 app might “destroy the economy,” as more people are “pinged” and told to self-isolate.
