Some of the Governors attending the Mombasa meeting on Universal Health Care(UHC) have lauded the program saying it will be a solution to address health care in the country. Governors Amason Kingi (Kilifi), Charity Ngilu (Kitui) and Alfed Mutua (Machakos) said that UHC can be a game changer in offering good health services for Kenyans. They however said that the mode of implementation is what should be considered most. “This is the best option in as far as addressing healthcare.
To me this is a good intiative but again, as the name suggests, it should be universal, meaning that it’s implementation should be equal on all Kenyans and not between the rich and poor,” said Governor Kingi. Ms Ngilu said that the program will make sure that the challenges about healthcare are addressed because a health nation can easily prosper in terms of development. “This is the best way to go but we need this program implemented on universal bases and not checking on who is to benefit and who should not,” said Governor Ngilu.
Dr Mutua said that the program is fine but there should be checks and balances before it is implemented. “We don’t want this program to look like it is discriminatory. It must be touching on every Kenyan because of it’s importance. So at least at the end of it, the implementation is what will be the most important thing. It should be an avenue to address healthcare in Kenya and that should be the core focus,” said Dr Mutua.
