Man Accused Of Extorting Dead Friend’s Family, Detained For 21 Days

He is accused of impersonating the late Wangai, making phone calls to his family and friends, and demanding money.

A man who extorted his late friend’s family in the United States without informing them that the friend had died has been detained for 21 days to pave way for investigations to complete.

According to court documents, Kasarani police officers arrested Stephen Karanja on January 13 for the murder of Victor Wangai.

He is accused of impersonating the late Wangai, making phone calls to his family and friends, and demanding money.

He is said to have contacted the late friend’s mother, Jane Nduta, as well as the deceased’s close friend, Everlyne Wakio.

According to court documents, the deceased’s family reported him missing on January 4 at a Kahawa West Police station.

A few days later, on January 10, they discovered the body of their late relative at the Kenyatta National Hospital Mortuary, labeled as an unknown African male.

Reports confirms that, the deceased was transferred from St Francis Community Hospital to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) on December 1, 2022.

On December 9, he passed away at the KNH.
