Police are holding two robbery suspects linked to the death of a 76-year-old woman at Serem area in Vihiga County.
In a statement on Friday, August 25, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspects are believed to have been part of a gang that violently robbed the woman before raping and killing her on July 18, 2023.
According to the DCI, Patrick Misiko, aged 36 and Christine Jerono, 46 were arrested in Majengo area, while in possession of the deceased’s mobile phone.
The phone – make Oking OK237 – was among items stolen from the woman last month.
“On the fateful night, the killer gang had broken into the house of the elderly woman in the dead of the night, descending on her with blunt objects and committing the abominable act,” DCI said.
The suspects are also said to have made away with the deceased’s gas cylinder, a solar cable and shopping, leaving her writhing in pain.
She was rushed to Mbale Referral Hospital where she died two days later.
“Neighbours who heard a commotion at her homestead but were too late to catch up with the robbers rushed her to Mbale Referral Hospital in a bid to save her life, but she succumbed to severe head injuries two days later,” DCI added.
“The incident was reported at Tambua Police Post and taken up by Hamisi Sub-county detectives, where Crime Scene Investigators backed up by their Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau counterparts initiated a forensic trail on the perpetrators.”
Police are still pursuing the suspect’s accomplices who are still at large.
