Farmers in Machakos County have been advised to plant short-rains crops as the upcoming rainy season is expected to be below normal.
According to Machakos County Meteorological Director Dominic Kyalo, the rains will begin in the last week of March and end by the third week of May.
He is urging farmers to seek guidance from agricultural offices at both county and ward levels to ensure they plant the right crops for better yields.
Farmers across Machakos County are being urged to prepare for a below-average rainfall season. Experts warn that those who fail to follow advisories may suffer poor harvests.
“We advise farmers to plant early-maturing crops to maximize yields. Those who followed our guidance last season recorded good harvests, except in some areas like Yatta, which received only 30% of expected rainfall, leading to poor yields.”
For now, sunny conditions are expected to persist until the onset of the rains. Dominic Kyalo is urging farmers to visit agricultural offices for professional advice to enhance food security in the region.
With unpredictable weather patterns becoming more common, experts insist that following meteorological advisories is key to mitigating losses and ensuring food production remains stable.
