Kenya National Highways Authority has deployed the advanced Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) technology to speed up the weighing process.
Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) technology is used to measure the weights and axle loads of vehicles travelling at a reduced or normal traffic speed and does not require vehicles to stop for weighing.
Speaking at the Mariakani Weighbridge, Cluster Manager Seth Ongwae said the technology has cut 80 per cent of traffic.
“Through these new WIM installations, we are only weighing 20 per cent of vehicles; which were flagged to have been overloaded. 80 per cent proceed with their journey”
He added that the WIM systems have reduced the Mariakani traffic jam that had been a menace due to truck traffic.
The new WIM devices are designed to capture and record axle weights and gross vehicle weights as vehicles pass over a measurement site.
This is instrumental in reducing road damage caused by overweight vehicles.
In the Mariakani Cluster, KeNHA has installed 5 WIM technologies to increase surveillance on overloaded trucks.
KeNHA has now partnered with Transport SACCOs to educate truck drivers on how to navigate the technology.
Mr. Ongwae stated that the new tech will go an extra mile in ensuring roads last longer, cutting repair and maintenance costs.
