Who Wanted Kenya’s First African Chief Justice Dead?

Kitili Maluki Mwendwa man who died on 27th September 1985 was Kenya’s first African Chief Justice.

He was the husband of Kenya’s first lady cabinet minister, Winfred Nyiva Mwendwa.

On the day he died, he was travelling to his 1000-acre coffee farm to pay his workers, driving alone at the time.

Officially, he died in a grisly road accident near the gate of Kenyatta University. But his rescuers decided to drive him to Thika Hospital, rather than Aga Khan Hospital.

So, who would have wanted Maluki Kitili Mwendwa dead?

It so happened that KANU elections were around the corner, and Kitili would have challenged for the KANU Vice Chair position then held by Vice President and Minister for Finance, Mwai Kibaki.

By the time of his death or assassination, Kitili had masterminded the election of Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka as Kitui North MP.
