You will now pay 200 to Nanyuki as Kenya Railway finalizes route

Commuters travelling from Nairobi to Nanyuki will pay Sh. 200 fare on second class coaches in the latest refurbished Nairobi-Nanyuki railway line – By Gerald Gekara.

Kenya Railways Corporation will Friday officially restart an old commercial passenger service on the Nairobi-Nanyuki line, after a two-decade hiatus.

The move is set to offer stiff competition to public service vehicles that charge more than double the fares.

The plan will also negotiate a Sh. 50 and Sh. 100 for inter-terminus trips serving Murang’a, Makuyu, Maragua, Sagana, Karatina, Kiganjo, Chaka and Naromoru stations.

“We are launching passenger operations on the Nairobi-Nanyuki meter gauge line this coming Friday targeting people planning to visit the Central region for short vacations,” Kenya Railways managing director Philip Mainga told the Business Daily yesterday.

The train with a capacity of up to 1,600 passengers on a single trip will depart from Nairobi at 8am to arrive in Nanyuki at 2pm.

It will leave Nanyuki on Sunday at 8am to arrive in the capital city at 2pm.

The parastatal is also working on the old railway track from Naivasha to Malaba as Kenya prepares to clear goods imported through the Port of Mombasa.

The service will target cargo headed to western Kenya and the neighbouring countries of Uganda, the Democratic Republic Congo and South Sudan through the Naivasha Dry port.
