#YouthDay: Government pledges more jobs for the youth, support innovation

It has been 20 years since the united nations designated today the 12th of august as the international youth day. This was a special day to stop and address the plight of the 1.1 billion young people in the world – By Faith Mutete.

During a virtual International Youth Day Concert live on Y254 TV ahead of the International Youth Day celebrated each year on 12th August, the Cabinet Secretary Ministry of ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs Joe Mucheru said the government is devoted to fully implementing youth employment.

The CS urged the youth to utilize the opportunities given to them through the various projects aimed at benefitting the youth.
“I want to thank the youth for their support in driving innovation and technology in the country,” he said.

The government has partnered with the World Bank to create employment opportunities for the youth through the Kenya Youth Employment Opportunities Project (KYEOP) 2016-2021.

The project aims to reach over 280,000 youths within selected counties in both urban and rural areas.

Additionally, the CS stated that the ministry has already rolled out the Ajira Digital program, which aims to empower over one million youths to access digital job opportunities.

On her part, the Chief Administrative Secretary(CAS) Nadia Abdalla urged the youth to be at the forefront in championing for change and development.

“I urge the youth to join the Ajira digital program to gain digital skills which will link them to jobs in Kenya and abroad,” she said

Nadia called upon the youth to utilize the Youth Enterprise Development Fund to finance their ideas and businesses.

“The Youth Enterprise Development fund is easily accessible and always ready to offer affordable financial support to youths starting or doing business at no interest,” she said

Also in Meru county in support of this years theme , youth engagement for global action,youth in Meru county held a youth forum to discuss the youth agenda and some of the issues that were affecting them.
