Helen Adhiambo Obado, the wife of Migori Governor Okoth Obado, has declared her support for Azimio-One Kenya presidential candidate Raila Odinga in the August 9 General Election.

Helen, who is running on an independent ticket, was cleared to run for the Migori Woman Representative seat by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission on Thursday, June 2.

Helen, who dropped her husband’s name from her campaign posters, said her one vote is firmly secured for Raila despite her husband being Deputy President William Ruto’s Nyanza region coordinator.

“Raila is vying for president. I am vying as a woman representative but he has my vote,” Helen said.

She spoke to journalists at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) offices in Migori Town shortly after being given the go-ahead to vie.

The woman representative hopeful has chosen sweet potatoes as her ballot symbol.

“I wish to fully campaign for Odinga but I will not give him my full support because I am independent and working harder to sell my sweet potato agenda,” she said.

The governor’s spouse pleaded with voters not to judge her on her husband’s performance, but rather on her abilities as a mother and leader.

“Don’t associate me with the governor’s legacy and anything to do with him that was his tenure I’m pleading with you to give me a chance as Hellen, not as the governor’s wife,” she pleaded.

She will face Dennitah Ghati of the ODM, Lillian Akugo of the Jubilee Party, and independent candidates Fatuma Mohammed and Josephine Sirega.

Obado has been using every public and social opportunity to criticize Raila and ODM party candidates.
