IEBC Ordered To Extend Voter Drive

The IEBC is prohibited from halting the enhanced voter registration exercise, according to directives obtained by the High Court in Eldoret on Monday.

Patrick Cherono, a voter, submitted a complaint alleging that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission failed to meet its goal of registering six million new voters.

On November 2, the improved voter registration program was set to terminate.

The IEBC and Parliament, which is supposed to pay the commission, were sued by the voter.

The orders will remain in effect until the matter is heard on November 9, according to Justice Eric Ogolla.

The final number of new voters registered during the four-week mass voter registration drive was scheduled to be released by the IEBC.

According to the commission’s estimates, just 800,462 new voters had been registered by the end of the third week, out of a total target of nearly six million.
