UoN Student’s 3 Day Strike Notice Over Fees

Kenya University Students Organization (KUSO) has demanded that new fees guidelines issued by University of Nairobi be vacated.

KUSO President Anthony Manyara said the increments have locked out students from poor families from accessing higher education.

Consequently, Manyara given the University fourteen days to rescind the decision or face a student unrest.

He said the proposed fee guidelines have been set aside by the court, and declared the increment contempt of court

KUSO president Anthony Manyara blamed the low turnout enrolment levels in UoN to arbitrary rise in University fees despite the rise in cost of doing business.

The management, led by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kiama Gitahi has now been given three days to comply with the orders, or face unrest within the school.

"KUSO has given the University of Nairobi administration led by Prof. Kiama Gitahi Stephen only three days (Friday, Monday & Tuesday) to convene a UMB/UEB meeting and consequently announce PUBLICLY on RESTORING initial fee structure model and REFUNDING excess fees already paid or ALLOCATE the same to next semester/academic year."

UoN decision to raise university fees has been roundly criticised by education stakeholders, including the Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha.

Prof. Kiama explained that the move will enable the university raise funds to cater for rising costs of operations.
